The Japanese でも

The Japanese でも (demo) is one of the first Japanese words we learned as beginners. It is also the easiest ‘but’.

 でも means ‘but’ in English.  It can also mean ‘however’ in English. It is use between two clauses.

For example:

わたしはビーチにいきました。でも、たのしめませんでした。
(私はビーチに行きました。 でも、楽しめませんでした。)
(Watashi ha bi-chi ni ikimashita. Demo, tanoshime masendeshita.)
I went to the beach. But I didn't enjoy it.

パーティーにいきたかったです。でも、とてもつかれていました。
(パーティーに行きたかったです。 でも、とても疲れていました。)
(Pa-ti- ni ikitakatta desu. Demo, totemo tsukarete imashita.)
I wanted to go to the party. But I was very tired.

あいしていますが、きらいでもあります。
(愛していますが、嫌いでもあります。)
(Aishite imasu ga, kirai demo arimasu.)
I love you, but I also hate you.

Question word plus でも:  ？？？ + でも
When でも is used with a question words like なに (なん), だれ, いつ, it can means something unconditional and can be applied to any things.

For example:

なんでも
(何でも)
(Nan demo)
Anything

だれでも
(誰でも)
(Dare demo)
Anyone

いつでも
(Itsu demo)
Anytime

なんでもかのうです。
(何でも可能です。)
(Nan demo kanou desu.)
Anything is possible.

いつでもでんわしてください。
(いつでも電話してください。)
(Itsu demo denwa shite kudasai.)
You can call me anytime.
