Conversation about Time in Japanese

Last time, I talked about time in Japanese. Now, let’s have some conversation. If you want to check my previous blog about time, you can check it here: Let’s talk about time in Japanese.

Let’s add the A.M and P.M.

A.M is ごぜん (午前) read as Gozen. While P.M is ごご (午後) read as Gogo.

はじめましょう。
始めましょう。
(Hajimemashou.)
 Let’s start.

Conversation 1:
If you want to ask ‘What time is it now?’, you will say:

いまなんじですか。

(今何時ですか。)
(Ima nanji desu ka.)
What time is it now?

If someone asks you ‘What time is it now?’, you can answer:

いまはくじはんです。
(今は9時半です。)
(Ima ha ku ji han desu.)
Right now, it’s 9:30. (It’s half past 9 now.)

You can change the 9:30 time depending on your current time.
Let’s say, it’s half past 7 AM. You can say:

ごぜん７じはんです。
(午前7時半です。)
(Gozen shichi ji han desu.)
It’s half past 7:00 AM. (It’s 7:30 AM.)

Conversation 2:

If you want to meet up with someone tomorrow, you can say:

わたしたちはあしたなんじにあえますか。
(私達は明日何時に会えますか。)
(Watashitachi ha ashita nanji ni aemasu ka.)
What time can we meet tomorrow?

or you may ask:

あしたはなんじにくればいいですか。
(明日は何時に来ればいいですか。)
(Ashita ha nanji ni kureba ii desu ka?)
What time should I come tomorrow?

You may answer it as:

あしたはごぜん１０じにあいましょう。
(明日は午前１０時に会いましょう。)
(Ashita ha gozen juuji ni aimashou.)
Let’s meet tomorrow at 10:00 AM.

Or you can say it in the afternoon:

あしたはごご１３じにあいましょう。
(明日は午後１３時に会いましょう。)
(Ashita ha gogo juusanji ni aimashou.)
Let’s meet tomorrow at 13:00. (Let’s meet tomorrow at 1:00 PM.)

Or you can say it in the evening:

ゆうがた、２０じにおあいしましょう。
(夕方、20時にお会いしましょう。)
(Yuugata, nijuu ji ni oaishimashou.)
I’ll see you at 20:00 tonight.
(I’ll see you in the evening at 20:00.) (I’ll see you in the evening at 8PM.)

Conversation 3:

Asking what time the meeting will start, you may say:

かいぎはいつはじまりますか。
(会議はいつ始まりますか。)
(Kaigi ha itsu hajimarimasu ka.)
When will the meeting start?

You may answer it:

かいぎは９じ４５ふんにはじまります。
(会議は9時45分に始まります。)
(Kaigi ha kuji yonjuugo fun ni hajimarimasu.)
The meeting will start at 9:45.

or you may answer:

ミーティングは１０じ１５ふんまえにはじまります。
(ミーティングは１０時15分前に始まります。)
(Mi-thingu ha juuji juugofun mae ni hajimarimasu.)
The meeting starts 15 minutes before 10:00 AM.

If you want to ask what time the meeting will end, you may say:

そのかいぎはなんじにおわりますか。
(その会議は何時に終わりますか。)
(Sono kaigi ha nanji ni owarimasu ka.)
What time will the meeting end?

You may answer:

ミーティングは５じ１５ふんまえにおわります。
(ミーティングは５時15分前に終わります。)
(Mi-thingu ha goji juugofun mae ni owarimasu. )
The meeting ends 15 minutes before 5:00.

Conversation 4:

Asking about how long someone works, you may ask:

なんじかんはたらきますか。
(何時間働きますか。)
(Nanjikan hatarakimasu ka。)
How many hours do you work?

or you may ask:

いちにちなんじかんはたらきますか。
(一日何時間働きますか。)
(Ichi nichi nanjikan hatarakimasu ka。)
How many hours do you work in a day?　

or you may also say:

なんじにあなたのしごとははじまりとなんじにおわりますか。
(何時にあなたの仕事は始まりと何時に終わりますか。)
(Nanji ni anata no shigoto ha hajimari to nanji ni owarimasu ka.)
What time does your work start and end?

For conversation 4, we can answer it in different ways.

８じから１７じまでしごとをします。
(8時から17時まで仕事をします。)
(Hachiji kara juushichiji made shigoto wo shimasu.)
I work from 8:00 to 17:00.

わたしのしごとは９じから１８じまでです。
(私の仕事は９時から１８時までです。)
(Watashi no shigoto ha kuji kara juuhachiji made desu.)
My work is from 9:00 to 18:00.

いちにち8じかんいじょうはたらいています。
(一日8時間以上働いています。)
(Ichi nichi hachi jikan ijou hataraiteimasu.)
I work for more than 8 hours a day.

アルバイトとして、いちにち４じかんはたらいています。
(アルバイトとして、一日4時間働いています。)
(Arubaito toshite, ichinichi yonjikan hataraiteimasu.)
As a part-time worker, I work for 4 hours a day.
